Here is Why "ETSFLE-Eating" is less frightened than it soundsDonovanosis can cause genital ulcers and tissue damage, but it is rare in the United States and may not be so "meat" after all. For Published on August 24, 2018, at 5:58 p.m. ET A sexually transmitted disease called donovanosis is getting a lot of attention after a young woman in England allegedly contracted the infection. If you have been on the Internet this week, you may have read about a terrible STD that is "meat meat" and may cause genitals to "rotate" away. Let's face it: "eat meat" and "STD" are two words you probably never want to hear in the same sentence. So what is this disease and you really need to be worried? The infection, donovanosis, can cause ulcers and scars disfigured in the genitals if not treated, the experts said BuzzFeed News, but it is rare and not really what most doctors would consider "eat meat." The stories began when the report that the online pharmacy had discovered that the infection was diagnosed in a 15-22-year-old woman in Southport, a city in the northwest of England. It is still unclear whether the case was confirmed by laboratory tests or notified to local health authorities. Chemist 4 U did not respond immediately to a request for comment. When asked about the case, a spokesman sent us this statement. "Innovation occurs mainly in tropical countries or regions of the Americas, Southern Africa and Oceania. It is very rarely diagnosed and reported in the UK. " STD is in some countries, but it is rare in the United States. There are fewer than 100 cases of donovanosis each year in the United States. In 2016, however, there were 1.59 million cases of chlamydia in the country. Most cases of donovanosis in the United States are believed to be internationally hired by travellers and returned to the United States. The disease is common in areas such as India, Papua New Guinea, Guyana, Brazil, Central Australia and Southern Africa, according to NLM. "In other words, it is not an infection that the average person will find in the United States," said a spokesman for the BuzzFeed News (ASHA). And if you travel to an area where donovanosis is common, you can take steps to protect yourself and your future sexual partners. While untreated donovanosis can cause genital ulcers that spread and damage the tissue, it is not necessarily "eat meat" as we know the term. Donovanosis, also known as , is an infection caused by the bacteria Klebsiella granulomatis. It is characterized by genital ulcers, or ulcers, so it is in the same category as syphilis and herpes, the ASHA spokesman said BuzzFeed News. It spreads through vaginal relationships or unprotected anals and rarely through oral sex. These ulcers begin as small red strokes and are usually indolorous, but according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Symptoms appear between 1 and 12 weeks after infection, and early stage donovanosis can be confused for , another STD that causes ulcer. If not treated, ulcers can worsen and cause permanent swelling and healing. The good news? It is treatable, typically with antibiotics, such as azithromycin and doxycycline, which are given for several weeks or until the ulcers have healed, according to NLM. However, it is possible to relapse, and ulcers may reappear in some people years later, so follow-up examinations are important. But wait... what about the meat eating part? Well, lesions associated with this infection can spread and damage or destroy the surrounding genital tissue, so yes, it can cause tissue death. This also happens with many other bacterial infections when not treated. And donovanosis is not the same as necrotizing fasciitis, or what we commonly know as meat eating disease, which is a severe infection often associated with Streptococcus bacteria. To destroy the soft tissue and cause loss of limbs or death. "Using the term 'meat food' to describe this ... definitely a care grabber. It's not entirely accurate," said ASHA spokesman. There is no need to panic — but you should still practice safe sex and test yourself to reduce your risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases. Yes, donovanosis can cause long-term damage if not treated. Chlamydia and gonorrhea, which are much more common infections, can also cause long-term damage (such as infertility) if not treated, says the ASHA spokesman. To prevent sexually transmitted infections, you should use condoms, be tested regularly and receive treatment for any STDs as soon as possible. If you have had vaginal, anal or oral sex without protection, you have a new sexual partner or multiple couples, or you think you might have been exposed to a STD, talk to your doctor about being tested. It should also be tested if you have symptoms, but many STDs are asymptomatic, so it is important to get routine tests even when you feel well. And if you notice an ulcer or pain in the genitals, go check it out by a health care provider—do not try to diagnose yourself. Meanwhile, don't panic and enjoy (safe) sex.
